STX powers the infrastructure where Bitcoin earns yield, serves as collateral, and participates in a global financial system, all settling natively on Bitcoin.

What STX Does

Three main functions on the network,

and each one creates demand for the asset.
Pays for every transaction
Every action on Stacks settles its fee in STX, from contract calls to sBTC transfers. More activity on the network means more STX changing hands.
Powers Bitcoin-native finance
Every smart contract, transaction, trade, and economic interaction on Stacks flows through STX and settles on Bitcoin.
Staking capacity asset
Every BTC bonded through Bitcoin Staking must lock STX worth at least 5% of it. Institutional demand for bitcoin yield turns directly into demand for STX.

STX Demand

Every Bitcoin bond locks STX.

Every transaction spends it.
Bitcoin Bonds

Every new bond
locks more STX

Every bonding period opens with a fixed BTC capacity, and as bonded BTC grows, the STX locked alongside it grows with it. The Genesis Bond opens ~10 September 2026 with capacity for 100 to 200 BTC.
How Bitcoin Staking works
Network activity

Every new app
adds fee demand

Stacks powers Bitcoin-native finance: lending, liquidity, stablecoin yields, and sBTC activity all driving demand for STX. That network activity scales with usage on the layer, independent of staking.

STX Fundamentals

What is STX
The native asset of Stacks. It pays network fees, secures the chain through Stacking, and is the asset locked
 alongside every bitcoin bond.
Track Record
Proof of Transfer has run in production since January 2021 and paid BTC to stakers
 every cycle since (4,224BTC distributed).
Supply
Find the circulating supply here
Emissions
Block rewards add ~2% to STX supply yearly. Miners spend BTC to win block production, and it flows back to STX stakers as yield.

How to hold it
Self-custody with Xverse or Leather. Institutional signing infrastructure through Fireblocks and Fordefi,

Common Questions

What is Stacks?

Thanks to the community's approval of SIP-031, core contributors have been able to address complexity through meaningful structural changes. For this updated approach, that means increased velocity, tighter feedback loops for builders, and concrete wins like the rapid rollout of the sBTC reward program and the active vote on Clarity 5. Stacks Labs and the Treasury Committee are aligned around an approach that centers on high-level vision and major milestones — focusing on real outcomes and progress rather than speculative feature dates.

What is STX used for?

These are tentpole ideas and high-impact areas where we believe Stacks can uniquely thrive. This document will be updated regularly. Where work is already underway, we provide links to active discussions and project updates. This is also an open invite — each key area welcomes input and collaboration from builders. This is not a set-in-stone schedule with guaranteed release dates. Innovation in decentralization rarely follows a linear path.

Where does STX demand come from?

In early 2026, Stacks hosted a Roadmap Workshop Series to surface priorities directly from the people building on and using the network. Sessions covered Builders Reaching Scale, an Open Community Call, AI Enablement, and Next Gen Governance — bringing together Stacks Labs, the Stacks Foundation, the Stacks Endowment, and dozens of active contributors. The themes and priorities from those conversations directly informed this roadmap and the full notes available via the forum.
