sBTC Signer Rotation Is Underway: New Institutional-Grade Signers Join the Set

The sBTC signer set has begun its planned rotation. A group of signers is winding down participation across July and August, and new institutional-grade signers are confirmed to join, with individual announcements rolling out over the coming weeks. The rotation is routine, verified on-chain at every step, and peg security remains fully intact throughout.

sBTC is how Bitcoin moves from the base layer into the Stacks network and back. It is a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed protocol secured by a decentralized set of signers who require 70% consensus to approve any deposit or withdrawal, removing the need for a single custodian or bridge operator to hold keys. The strength of that model depends entirely on who the signers are, and this rotation makes the set more institutional and Bitcoin-native than ever.

Why the Signer Set Rotates

A decentralized signer set is a living network, and rotation is part of its design. Signers commit infrastructure, key shares, and operational overhead to the set, and as priorities shift, some step back while others step in. The protocol is designed for exactly this: the 70% consensus threshold holds throughout the transition, every handoff is verified onchain, and no BTC ever moves with fewer approvals than before. Each cycle is also how the set gets stronger, bringing in signers whose infrastructure and regulatory posture match where Bitcoin-native finance is heading.

Thank You to the Outgoing Signers

The Stacks ecosystem shares its appreciation for DeSpread, Chorus One, Kiln, Xlab, and Alum Labs for supporting sBTC in its rise to becoming the largest productive BTC class on a Bitcoin layer.

Each of these teams helped secure sBTC through its earliest and most important phase. Their contribution to bootstrapping decentralized Bitcoin movement on Stacks stands, and the network is stronger for it.

Three New Signers Are Rotating In

The signers securing sBTC increasingly look like the institutions that use it. New signers have committed to the set: infrastructure operated for some of the largest networks in crypto, regulated digital asset expertise, and years of service to institutional investors. Individual announcements land over the coming weeks.

Becoming a signer is a real commitment. It means running infrastructure, holding a key share, and sharing responsibility for BTC moving between Bitcoin and Stacks. Institutions take that on when they believe in where the asset is going believe in the goal of making Bitcoin productive capital.

What This Means for sBTC

The Stacks ecosystem and its core contributors welcome this new cohort to the signer set. Their arrival strengthens what makes sBTC work: a decentralized network of signers securing the movement of the largest Bitcoin asset on the leading Bitcoin layer by BTC deployed, without a single entity ever holding the keys. The first new signer announcement lands soon.
